File-Format Independence
One of the primary concerns for today’s commercial print company is the variety of file formats that submitted jobs are sent.  The continuing growth of the PDF file format certainly helps, but also creates another problem in that all PDF files are not “Print-Ready” PDF files.

It’s certainly getting easier to produce a PDF file, but not necessarily one which will RIP and output to plate correctly.  More and more desktop applications are allowing creatives to produce PDF files directly, rather than creating the PDF file subsequently from a PostScript file.  

There are also plenty of non PDF-based file formats that commercial printers receive every day – DCS, EPS, TIFF, JPEG, maybe native file formats from desktop applications.   Unlike printers specialising in, perhaps publication printing, commercial printers don’t have the luxury of being able to control or dictate the type and quality of the digital files that they receive.  They often need to produce the job, to spec and to deadline, regardless of the quality of the received file.
