ES accompanies Pierre Fabre product lifecycles

Interview with Mr. Gérard Serra, director of Pastel création-production, a creative agency for the Pierre Fabre group (dermo-cosmetics, health, medicine).

You purchased ES and DIALOGUE Engine to process and monitor your editing and POS production. What were your reasons for choosing these products?
We did not have any real monitoring tool for editing and point of sales despite the magnitude of our production, which is worth about 80 million euros. We developed an internal electronic proofing tool for packaging (leaflets, cases), which is a little dated and could be replaced by the DALIM SOFTWARE solution if it met with our complete satisfaction. After a lengthy study of two competitive solutions, DALIM SOFTWARE and Esko (specialised package), we opted for DIALOGUE Engine because we saw a more professional and also a more editorial bias in this solution. Plus, if it was extended to the package, this solution could be audited by the health authorities, especially by the food and drug authorities in the USA.

With respect to ES, besides the web-based platform, which has become a standard offer now, the crucial advantages were the HD display, which our e-BAT tool did not allow, and the fact that for POS we could upload high-definition files, which is still files of 100 to 120 MB… The display speed is also a plus because the engine only imports the part you zoom in on, not the entire file. Finally, the ergonomics and customisable settings were also compelling for us.

With regard to customisation, what context does the DALIM SOFTWARE system fit into that is particular to Pierre Fabre?
In fact, even if ES is designed primarily for use by professionals for professionals, and this is, as a matter of fact, ultimately our case, we are also “getting on board” with stakeholders in the marketing field. Fortunately for those who did not want to bother with the software, the “DIALOGUE Engine” part gives them immediate access, via a link in an e-mail, to the action to be performed: proofreading, approval, etc. They can also connect themselves in order to monitor a file.

You have a project approach that goes beyond monitoring production, can you tell us about this?
The stages are quite complicated because in POS, there is high-volume processing, image processing, manufacturing time processing and this project concept was not quite ready in ES DIALOGUE Engine. Hence we had to develop it with the assistance of our integrator Galilée.

What return on investment do you expect from the DALIM SOFTWARE solution?
More than anything else, I expect time savings. When I initiate a file, my “clients”, who are production managers, receive a quote and a turnaround time. And either these are accepted, or we have a look to see where we can make concessions. We now have a collaborative tool which helps identify exactly where a folder is within a project. Is it in design, manufacturing, photoengraving? From that point of view, I have noticed time savings in dealings with pub managers, including saving on phone calls, which I estimate to be a saving of at least 15%.

Could you estimate what time you save overall, in monitoring a project?

ES will allow us to manage tasks in parallel now instead of cascaded. When working with a physical file, it has to be passed from one person to another whereas with the flow that we have described, we will be able to produce the text of a document whilst the photoengraving is underway since the design work is done. Everyone has a deadline and by parallelising certain tasks, we can achieve a time saving of 5 or 6%.

What other opportunities do you have in connection with ES?

We added quite a few things that were not native in ES, but which the software could do, such as reporting and statistics. We have incorporated the DALIM SOFTWARE tool into a much wider project called PLM (Product Lifecycle Management). At certain times, we needed to be able to connect and communicate with this system, and ES allows that via its SDK interface. Then, as we control the product, from design to manufacturing to release, we then have another internal program that takes over. This project, called Chrome, handles delivery to the subsidiaries, located in 54 countries around the world, and collects information about their needs so we can provide better quotes. Hence, ES interacts with both of these software systems, PLM and Chrome.
